Events
Here are some of the upcoming events, workshops and activities we are organizing. These workshops are all free and open to everyone!
A friendly, hands-on workshop series based in Dundee, supporting people to understand the hidden systems behind the digital world and how they connect to climate justice at a local level.
Across the workshops, we will explore how the internet really works, from undersea cables and data centres to energy use and carbon impact, and how these global systems show up in Dundee and beyond.
Together, we will share knowledge, build confidence, and create resources that help Dundee imagine and grow local digital infrastructure that is community-led, climate-aware, and less dependent on extractive, energy-intensive big tech systems.
Who's it for?
Anyone curious about technology, climate, justice, or the systems shaping everyday life, artists, educators, activists, students, and interested internet users.
No writing or technical expertise needed, just a willingness to collaborate, reflect, and share. Lunch, snacks and drinks will be provided.
Events:
Making the Invisible Visible: How the Internet Really Works
Saturday 21 February 2026 | 10am–4pm
A friendly, interactive introduction to the physical infrastructure behind the internet, cables, servers, data centres, energy use and carbon impact. We will map our digital journeys and learn how global systems affect local communities and the climate.
Build Your Own Network: Community Networking Skills
Saturday 28 February 2026 | 10am–4pm
Hands-on look at the basics of networking. Using paper prototypes, we will visualise small local networks, learn about routers, switches and Wi-Fi security, and explore how community-owned networks can reduce environmental impact while improving digital access.
Everyday System Admin: Exploring Open-Source Tools for Community Servers
Saturday 7 March 2026 | 10am–4pm
This workshop focuses on the software that powers community servers. We will learn about open-source tools, such as Nextcloud, Etherpad and Matrix, alternative big-tech platforms that give communities more control over data, privacy and energy use. This workshop will show that digital infrastructure doesn’t have to be complex, corporate, or power hungry, it can be open, local, empowering and built for the common good.
Co-Creating an Open-Source Learning Pack
Saturday 14 March 2026 | 10am–4pm
This final workshop brings the journey together. It is an invitation to reflect, document, and share what we have learned about digital infrastructure, community networking, and open-source tools. Open to people who have taken part in the earlier workshops, and those who already have experience or interest in community tech. By the end of the day, we will have collaboratively produced a learning resource rooted in real experience, open, practical, and designed for community use.
