Build Your Own Network: Community Networking Skills

Build Your Own Network: Community Networking Skills

Saturday 28 February 2026 | 10am–4pm

A hands-on look at the basics of networking. Using paper prototypes, we will visualise small local networks, learn about routers, switches and Wi-Fi security, and explore how community-owned networks can reduce environmental impact while improving digital access.

Together, we will explore where our everyday online activities actually travel, uncover the hidden material and energy costs of digital services, and discuss who benefits and who bears the impact of this infrastructure.

Through simple activities, discussion, and shared mapping, we will build a clearer picture of how the internet connects places, people, and environments, and consider how greater awareness can support more just and sustainable digital futures.

Together we will explore:

  • How our everyday online activity moves through networks and data centers. The hidden environmental and social costs of digital services.
  • Who benefits from digital infrastructure—and who bears the impact.
  • How community-led networks can make access fairer and more sustainable.

No prior technical knowledge is required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore how networks connect people, places, and the environment.
